Happiness Is Not a Destination; It's a Way of Life

November 4, 2019

Some people say there are no coincidences in the universe, so when something jumps out at me, I take note. When I was in Ace Hardware the other day, I found myself face-to-face with a wooden sign bearing this important reminder: Happiness is not a destination; it's a way of life.

First, I’d like to say I’m guilty of not following this one. Like most people, I always seem to have some sort of plan or goal that I believe will make me happy. If only I could lose 20 pounds…if only I could land my dream job…if only I lived in a different house. The problem with this is you’re putting your happiness on hold while you work to achieve something. Is being happy really supposed to be so much work? I think not.

Happiness is not a place we need to get to. It’s a mindset. If you notice, the people who are happiest are not necessarily those who are rich, thin, beautiful or successful. Instead, they are those who appreciate what they have and make a point to enjoy life. You don’t need to go anywhere or do anything to be truly happy. Happiness is a choice you make. It’s a lifestyle.

Today I look around at all I am grateful for. I choose happiness. How about you?
