Your joy is on the other side of pain. This important message came to me while I was taking a walk and thinking about what it takes to be happy.
We’ve all had painful and traumatic experiences that interfere with our lives and hold us back. I’ve spent a lot of time wishing life could be the way it used to be. Like many of you, I’ve tried hard to somehow get back what was lost and have resisted what is. This does nothing but keep us stuck!
Getting through the pain first involves ACCEPTANCE. You finally say to yourself: This is the way my life is right now. There is no going back. And then you stop fighting against it.
To find joy again, we need take on the pain and fully experience it before we can move on. Cry, scream, get angry, write in a journal, talk to a trusted friend — do whatever you need to do to work through that pain. Don’t pretend it’s not there or try to make it go away. Instead, travel through it. It won’t be easy, but when you emerge on the other side, you will be be on the path to happiness again.
