Loneliness

By Deanna Kahler

A feather blowing in the wind

Piercing silence in the dead of the night

A solitary rose petal lying in the grass

An empty house

A single tear

A soft touch that escapes you

An ache that fills your chest as you long to feel someone’s arms around you

Holding you tight

Keeping you safe

But you’re disconnected

Separated

A puzzle piece that doesn’t quite fit

Emptiness encompasses your body and heart like a dense fog

You listen intently, but all you can hear is the sound of your own breath

All you can feel is the ebb and flow of your own emotions

Sadness follows you, even in happy times

Especially in happy times

For it is then when you realize you are alone

No one will share the moment with you

There is nothing

But loneliness
